Our Journey to Sustainability

  • 23rd Apr 2024

On our journey to be carbon neutral by 2030, we are already taking purposeful steps to minimise the fuel we consume and increase our energy supply from renewable sources. We are changing our behaviours and practices in important areas.

What are we doing?

We commissioned a professional energy survey of our estate and will be acting on its recommendations to reduce energy consumption in the months ahead. We are committed to securing our electricity supplies on a contract where the percentage of renewables is 70% or more, with the goal of sourcing electricity with 100% renewable sources by 2030. By this time, we will also have phased out mains gas usage.

What are we doing that can help our customers?

Reducing waste and minimising carbon emissions in our product manufacturing, supply and servicing of those products is a top priority for us.

We manufacture products in-house to avoid unnecessary transportation costs wherever possible, following the principles of lean processes to minimise waste and the excessive movement of raw materials, work in progress and finished inventory. Raw materials and components are sourced from local suppliers, whenever possible and we expect all our suppliers to complete a sustainability audit to meet preferred Bull Products supplier status. This approach helps minimise costs for our customers and gives them peace of mind that they are working with a responsible business.

Our fire alarm products at Bull Products have received the ‘Made in Britain’ collective mark, which represents a standard of quality and unity for the British manufacturing sector within the UK and around the world. Being manufactured in the UK means lower transportation requirements, reducing CO2 emissions.

Through our Green Bull division, we are fully equipped to Recover, Revive and Reuse our products when it is safe and practical to do so. Fire protection equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire alarms and trolleys, are recovered from sites to our Green Bull facility to be revived, incorporating the majority of the original components, to produce a finished product in full working condition, compliant with all relevant regulations for re-use.

In our field, where we are supplying fire safety products for temporary use on building, construction and civil engineering projects, customers can take advantage of our asset management service to minimise their costs and carbon footprint even further. Our asset management solution enables fire extinguishers, fire alarms and first responder stations to be collected from site when it completes and stored in a safe and secure environment, then serviced, delivered, installed and commissioned ready for use, when required, to a new site.

It is important to ensure engineers are multi-skilled so they can service fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and conduct a fire risk assessment as well as service the access control equipment on site, if required to do so. This has the effect of reducing what could be four journeys down to a single trip. At Bull Products, we have engineers with the right multi-disciplined skill sets to maximise their efficiency on site, minimise the frequency of visits and cut costs to customers, supported by a network of regional storage and distribution centres.

We are a company committed to sustainability and we’re determined to drive initiatives within our business and beyond with the aim of creating a zero-carbon fire safety sector. This is the future of our industry, and we all share the responsibility to make it happen.
