Defibrillator – The Importance of Having One on Site

Workers on construction sites are faced with a number of dangers each day including electrical hazards, fires, and falls from height. Although companies take preventative measures to ensure fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and first aid kits are located on site, there is one piece of equipment that is often left off the list – an Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs).

Did you know? Almost half of all casualties are resuscitated with a defibrillator, and with every minute delay, a casualty’s chance of survival decreases by 10%.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) survival rates outside of hospitals are currently less than 8.6 per cent[1], but the use of a defibrillator within three to five minutes of the SCA can increase the patient’s survival chance to over 74 per cent.[2]

But how many companies actually have a defibrillator on site? Our team at Bull recently carried out a first aid survey which revealed that 38% of workers said there was no defibrillator located on site, and more than 50% of workers had not been trained to use a defibrillator.

Work on construction sites often means hard to access areas and tall buildings, therefore having an AED on site is crucial to protecting your workers, as emergency responders may not be able to get there in time. And by the time a paramedic arrives, it could be too late.

So, what’s the first step? Check whether your site requires a defibrillator by carrying out an in-depth risk assessment to discover the first aid needs of your workplace.

Although it’s not currently enforced by law to have one on site, if your assessment indicates a need, it’s important to ensure the correct number of defibrillators are located on site, and it’s equally important to make sure staff are fully trained on how to use and maintain the equipment.

The decision to purchase a defibrillator should be on your list when it comes to first aid equipment – after all, if it could potentially save one worker’s life, it’s worth having.
